Figueroa's Framework
There are many factors that impact upon ones access, equity
and equality to sport and physical activity. Professor Peter
Figueroa PhD in sociology, developed a framework that assists individuals and society to
firstly, identify these factors, along with the influence it has on people
(e.g. positive or negative). Identification of these influential factors allows individuals and society to
challenge and overcome any barriers or inequities that they may pose (G.
Amezdroz, S. Dickens, G. Hosford, T. Stewart, D. Davis, 2010; Kiss, Kleoudis,
Rasi and Stewart, 2010).
Five distinct levels make up the framework; the individual,
interpersonal, institutional, structural and cultural levels (as seen in Figure
1). Despite the different levels, each are all heavily interlinked with the
others, meaning that components and influences of one level will help shape,
adjoining levels in respects to a group of people or an individual (Amezdroz et
al, 2010).
The
individual level concerns itself with personal attributes, beliefs and values
shaped by an individual’s access and equity experiences. These of which affect
individuals participation in sport and physical activity. The components of the
individual level (Figure 2) have all contributed to the high probability that the
individual will participate or take up dance in years to come.
